PRESENTING A Stunning and Iconic Vintage Indian Tapestry of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal.
We are of the belief that this is from the early 20th Century, circa 1920.
Built of Cotton and hand-painted with an image of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal , with the former presenting the Taj Mahal to his lover Mumtaz versus the qualifications placing of a starry night time sky with crescent moon. Each of the ‘star crossed fans’ are kneeling on a rug and both superbly attired in traditional costume.
A Certainly Iconic Picture!
Quite vibrant colors, but the age of the piece is apparent from the slight discoloration as evidenced on the white pieces in the images.
We imagine this to be a remarkably fascinating piece of Southeast Asian or Indian textile or tapestry and is most probable from Central India as the original collector would seem to have had a ‘connection’ with Central India, in that, most of the things he collected ended up from that area and most were ordered by him at either Christie’s or Sotheby’s NY Auctions among 1999 and 2008.
